Fasting in light of Ahadith
Hazrat Fatema Zehra (a.s) proclaimed: What is the use of a fast if the tongue, ears, eyes and other parts of body are not prevented from sinning.
Imam Ali (as) relates that the Holy Prophet (sawaw) said: O' people, the month of blessings and mercy is approaching you. This is the month wherein sins are forgiven.... your deeds will be accepted and your wishes will be granted.
*Therefore, purge your heart of all evils and pray to Allah with a pure heart.
*May Allah bless you with the ability to fast and recite the Holy Quran.
*Whoever is deprived of Allah's mercy during this grand month, will remain miserable.
*During the hunger and thirst of this month, think of the hunger and thirst on the Judgment Day.
*Give charity to the needy, respect your elders, be merciful towards the youngsters and be kind to the relatives.
* Save your tongues from saying the things that should not be said.
*Protect your ears from hearing what is not halal.
*Have mercy on people's orphans so that others may have mercy on your orphans after you.
*Repent and think of Allah.
*Raise your hands during namaz because this is the best time. (During this time) Allah directs his mercy towards his humans and answers those who plead Him.
*...Your backs have been burdened due to your sins so try to relieve them through "sajdas". The Almighty Allah has sworn that those who do "sajdas" and offer namaz during this month will not be tormented or threatened by the flames of Hell.
* O' people, whoever gives iftar to a momin will get the reward of freeing a slave and his previous sins will be forgiven.
*Whoever takes less work from his workers during this month, will be questioned more leniently on Judgment Day.
* Whoever casts a merciful and respectful look towards an orphan during this month will earn Allah's mercy on the Day of Judgment.
*... During this month, whoever recites one ayat of the Holy Quran will be rewarded for having recited the complete Quran..
Imam-e-Baqir (a.s) explained that: Just as Hazrat Mohammed (sawaw) is sublime among all the prophets, the month of Ramzan is superior to the other months.
Amirul Momineen Imam Ali (as) stated that among those who fast, there are many who do not have any share except hunger and thirst. There are many worshippers who gain nothing but physical stress through their worship.
In order to please the Almighty through our fasting, Imam Jaffar al Sadiq (as) said that while fasting:
*You must make your ears, eyes, hair, skin and all the parts of the body fast. This means they must be guarded against what is haram and even what is "makruh.
*The day you fast should not be like the day you did not fast.
* Fasting is not just abstaining from eating and drinking. You must also hold your tongue from lying and eyes from seeing the haram.
*Do not fight.
*Do not be jealous of others.
*Do not complain against others.
*Avoid swearing falsely and even for the truth.
*Keep yourself from abusing and being cruel.
*Do not be ignorant.
*Think of Allah and do not overlook Namaz.
* Do not say something, which should not be said.
* Be patient and truthful.
* Stay away from bad company.
*Abstain from lying, fighting, complaining and all such things.
* Consider yourself close to the hereafter.
* Await the advent of Qaim-e-Aley Mohammed (as).
* Hope for the reward in the hereafter.
Imam Sadiq (as) declared: Whoever is not forgiven during this month will not be forgiven till the following year, unless he comes on the day of Arfah!
During this month, let us all pray for the zahoor of our beloved Imam-e-Zaman (as) who commanded: Pray for my quick advent because this is the solution to your problems!
