Iranian intelligence seals office of late ayatollah Montazeri

By: Anjum Kermani

PARIS, France: Late Iranian ayatollah Hossein-Ali Montazeri’s office in the city of Qom was closed down and sealed off Monday by intelligence services, opposition websites reported.

According to the reports, the office was attacked Sunday by pro-government hardliners and the intelligence service therefore decided Monday to shut it down.

Montazeri, who died last year aged 87, was a fierce critic of President Mahmud Ahmadinejad and accused his government of dictatorship after his disputed re-election last June.

No one was injured in the attack against the office but the hardliners damage office equipment, destroyed documents and tore up the ayatollah's pictures.

His office was attacked after Mehdi Karroubi, the head of the opposition Etemad Melli party, visited the area.

Karroubi's car was reportedly also attacked by the hardliners but the moderate cleric was not injured.
