Marking Ashura Saudi forces withdraw from Shiite villages

By: Abdulali

QATIF, Saudi Arabia: Marking the beginning of Moharram, Saudi security forces have withdrawn from Shiite villages in Qatif in the oil-rich mominin-dominated eastern Saudi Arabia following unrest last week in which four people were martyred, according to witnesses.

The move appears aimed at reducing friction with the kingdom's Shiites on the first day of Ashura.

Security forces pulled out overnight from Shweika and Awamiya villages in the Eastern Province, scene of intense clashes between protesters and security forces.

One witness said: "Armored vehicles transporting anti-riot forces towards Dammam city have pulled out and checkpoints have been lifted," after those forces were brought in as reinforcements during demonstrations.
