Indian PM arrives in Held Kashmir, strike cripples valley By: A. A. Rathor SRINAGAR, Held Kashmir: A general strike on Friday to protest against a rare visit to the held valley by Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee paralyzed life in various parts of Indian-occupied Kashmir. The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) made the call for strike that shut shops, stores and businesses. According to a spokesman for the APHC police in the held valley also arrested vice chairman of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Javed Mir. Addressing a rally in Held Kashmir’s capital city Srinagar, Premier Vajpayee who arrived here Friday under ultra-tight security on a two-day visit called for talks with Pakistan over the Himalayan region. The last time an Indian Prime Minister addressed a rally in Srinagar was 15 years ago. END |
