Iraqi joy and jubilation overflow over Saddam's capture By: Ismail Zabeeh
HOLY CITY OF NAJAF, Iraq: As nations cheered news of fallen dictator and the worst oppressor Saddam Hussein's capture on Sunday, Iraqis across the globe celebrated the arrest by thanking Almighty Allah, visiting the holy Shrines of Prophet (p)’s progeny in holy cities, blasting away with their favorite weapons pointed to the skies, folk dancing in the streets and demanding trial for the dictator. People started to slaughter sheep to fuel the celebrations, radios played festive music, drivers honked their horns and passengers on buses and trucks chanted ‘They got Saddam, they got Saddam,’ as word that the former dictator had been captured alive near his hometown Tikrit spread from car to car and shop to shop on a sun-filled Sunday afternoon.
In central Fardous Square, people threw old bank notes bearing Saddam's face into the air. “Long live Iraq,” they shouted repeatedly. Huge crowds gathered around cafes with television sets tuned to Arabic satellite channels following every detail of the arrest.
Iraqi journalists gave US officials a standing ovation and cheered wildly when video of a captured Saddam was shown during a news conference announcing the arrest. Ayet Bassem was overcome with a sense of relief. “Things will be better for my son,” she said clutching the hand of six-year-old Zenul Abedin. “My son now has a future.” END Saddam arrested
