Indian Muslims observe Babri Mosque razing By: Irfan Malik LUCKNOW, India: Indian Muslims on December 6, Saturday, observed the eleventh anniversary of the razing of Babri Mosque with holding protest rallies and Hindu hardliners celebrated. The 16th century Babri Mosque in the northern city of Ayodhya in the state of Uttar Pradesh was demolished by Hindu hardliners in 1992. The razing triggered bloody riots nationwide that left thousands of people dead. Police and federal forces were on alert in Aydohya and other cities to prevent violence. In Indian-held Kashmir, strike was observed to mark the day. All educational institutions, government offices and shopping centers were closed while vehicular traffic was thin. All Parties Huriyyat Conference (APHC) had given the strike call after they were denied permission for a rally. END |
