Hindu violence escalates over Babri Mosque By: Irfan Malik NEW DELHI, India: Defying curfew orders, hardline Hindus burned several buses on Thursday in four central Indian towns on a third day of anti-Muslim violence. Authorities imposed an indefinite curfew at several places in central part of the country following an outbreak of violence linked to protests by rightwing Hindu groups after police stopped them from storming the former Babri Mosque site in Ayodhya, northern India. Sanjay Dube, the top administration official in central Madhya Pradesh state's Dhar district said at least 200 people have been arrested so far. In 1992, a Hindu mob demolished the mosque leading to nationwide riots that left 2,000 dead mostly Muslims. END |
