Indian Muslims protest over cleric’s arrest By: Irfan Malik AHMADABAD, India: A strike on Friday to protest the arrest of a popular Muslim cleric by Indian authorities in a western Indian town paralyzed life shutting schools and businesses down and keeping traffic off the roads. The strike in Godhra, 170 kilometers west of Gujarat state's capital, Ahmadabad, began Thursday, hours after police seized Maulana Hussein Umarji in the town. Police alleged that Maulana Umarji, a prayer leader in Gujarat, plotted last February train attack that sparked the country’s worst Hindu-Muslim riots in a decade leaving more than 1,000 people dead mostly Muslims. Maulana Umarji, in his mid 50s, was expected to appear in court on Friday. He has not been formally charged, but a man accused of involvement in the attack has testified against him. END |
