Ayat Hakim believes Int’l bodies can prevent Iraq war By: Sultan Ahmed ABU DHABI: Head of Supreme Council of Islamic Revolution in Iraq Ayatullah Muhammad Baqir Al-Hakim has urged the international community to convince Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to quit throne to avert a possible US war on Iraq. In an interview, published Friday, with Saudi-owned daily Al-Hayat, he said: “We believe the United Nations, the Arab League and the Organization of the Islamic Conference can prevent a war against Iraq if they assume their responsibilities toward the Iraqi people and opt for (regime) change.” Ayatullah Al-Hakim outlined for UN, AL and OIC two options aimed at saving the Iraqi people: Convince Saddam to step down and allow Iraqis to elect who will govern them, or implement UN Security Council resolution 688 that bans Iraqi president from using heavy weapons to crush any internal anti-regime move.
