‘The Martyrs Day’ observed in Held Kashmir By: A. A. Rathor SRINAGAR, Held Kashmir: A complete strike and protest rallies marked the “Kashmir Martyrs Day” on Sunday July 13 throughout Indian-held Kashmir to pay homage to all those who have sacrificed their lives for Kashmir's freedom since 1931. The strike was “to commemorate those who laid (down) their lives for the freedom of Kashmir in 1931... and to remember all those who have sacrificed their lives for Kashmir's freedom since 1931,” the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) which called the strike said in a statement. It was July 13, 1931, when 21 Kashmiris protesting the Maharaja Hari Singh's autocratic rule in the Himalayan region were martyred by his army outside the central jail in Srinagar. Meanwhile, police detained more than a dozen Kashmiris including two senior leaders, Shabir Shah and Javed Mir, in the held valley for staging a march to mourn the 21 Kashmiris slain 72 years ago by a Hindu king on the day.
