Israel okays release of Palestinian prisoners By: Ahmad Hammadi JERUSALEM: In an effort to boost a US-backed peace plan and a truce declared by two Palestinian groups, the Israeli cabinet on Sunday has given green light for the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. According to senior government officials and reports the cabinet voted 13-8 in favor of the release of prisoners who met criterion set by Israel's Shin Bet domestic security service. The terms were not immediately announced. Palestinians are demanding release of all thousands of prisoners held in Israeli bars, and the number of prisoners to be set free on basis of Shin Beth is likely to fall short of Palestinian demands. Different human rights groups’ information sheets say that over 600,000 Palestinians have been detained in Israeli lockups since 1967, while during 1987-1994, Israel arrested some 175,000 Palestinians.
