Hamas leader survives Israeli attempt, 2 martyred

GAZA CITY: Israel on Tuesday launched a missile strike in Gaza City leaving a senior leader of Hamas Abdul Aziz El-Rantissi plus 26 others wounded and two passersby - a woman and a five-year-old girl - martyred.
Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas condemned the strike, occurred on a busy thoroughfare, as a terrorist attack intended to sabotage peace moves.
“We consider this (assassination) attempt a terrible crime and a terrorist operation in the full sense of the word because it targets innocent people,” he said.
Witnesses said Israeli gunships fired a first missile on Rantissi's jeep shortly before 11:00 am (0800 GMT), and that all the occupants jumped out of the vehicle before it was completely destroyed by two more missiles.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Palestinians gathered at Shifa hospital and shouted slogans against Premier Mahmoud Abbas who called for a demilitarization of the intifada.
