Powell refuses meeting Arafat, Pals protest

RAMALLAH, West Bank: Strike was observed on Sunday in the West Bank city of Ramallah protesting against visiting US State Secretary Colin Powell's refusal to meet Palestinian president Yasser Arafat.
Powell on Sunday held talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon at Sharon's residence in Jerusalem. During meeting, the American official called on Israel and the Palestinians to begin implementing the internationally-backed roadmap for peace.
He also met with Palestinian Premier Mahmoud Abbas whose position was created under huge US-Israeli pressure and as a means of sidelining Yasser Arafat.
