Top Palestinian peace negotiator quits By: Ahmad Hammadi GAZA CITY: Palestinian Minister for Negotiation Affairs Saeb Erekat has resigned from his office, a day before the proposed major summit between the Israeli Premier Ariel Sharon and his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas was due. This was told by a Palestinian official on Friday, who further added that the resignation was submitted to Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday. He gave no reason of the unexpected resignation. Erekat - a prominent figure in Palestinian national politics since 1996 – was one of the top members of the Palestinian cabinet created last month by Abbas, who took office in a power-sharing move with President Yasser Arafat ahead of the introduction of an American-led “road map” to Mideast peace.
