Russian top diplomat says Arafat couldn’t be sidelined

MOSCOW, Russia: Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Saltanov has described Palestinian president Yasser Arafat as a leader who still has political weight.
In an interview published Tuesday in the Vremya Novostei daily, he said Arafat couldn’t be sidelined from efforts to reach peace in the Middle East region.
“We have to work with him so he can bring influence to bear on the situation to achieve progress in the settlement process,” the minister added.
