At odds Israeli cabinet approves ME 'road map' By: Ahmad Hammadi JERUSALEM: A US-backed peace "road map" that envisages a historic call to establish a Palestinian state by 2005 has been scarcely approved by the Israeli Cabinet on Sunday two days after Israeli Premier reluctantly embraced it as the US declared to take Israeli requests on the plan into account. The Cabinet approved the plan by a 12-7 vote, with four abstentions. It is the first time that an Israeli government formally affirmed the Palestinians' right to statehood. Soon after the plan was presented last month, the Palestinians accepted it but Israel wanted key changes. Among other things, Sharon insisted that the Palestinians drop without further discussion a demand for the "right of return" of Palestinian refugees to Israel. END |
