By: Mohamed Ali

NEW YORK: Hawzah Ilmiyah Najaf-e-Ashraf, International bodies, organizations and Ayaat have strongly condemned a suicide attack on an Iraqi leader Sayyed Abdul Aziz Al-Hakim, Chairman Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq and son of late Grand Marjay of Shiite world Sayyed Mohsen Al-Hakim, that left 15 people martyred and over 60 wounded.

A car bomb exploded earlier Monday outside the headquarters of Abdul Aziz Al-Hakim. He escaped unscathed.

Holy Najaf Hawza, in a statement, severely slammed the life attempt in which several Mo’mineen were martyred and injured. It paid tributes to the family of Sayyed Abdul Aziz Al-Hakim which presented scores of martyrs at the hands of Saddam in jails and mass graves.

The Hawza while paying thanks to Allah on keeping Al-Hakim safe prayed for the safety of all Iraqis called Iraqi people for calm to thwart the conspiracies of enemies and demanded from the government to seize criminals.

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan denounced the assassination bid.

“The secretary general has learned with dismay of the suicide attack which occurred in Baghdad outside the home of the leader of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution,” UN spokesman Fred Eckhard said in a statement. “The secretary general condemns this attack in the strongest terms and reiterates that such acts of violence are indefensible.”

“At this critical time of Iraq's history, the secretary general calls on all Iraqis to unite in a spirit of national reconciliation, so that elections can take place in a peaceful and orderly fashion.”

The Tehreek Nafaz-e-Fiqh-e-Jafariya Pakistan Central Spokesman condemned life attempt against Marja-i-Azam Shiian-e-Jahan Grand Ayatullah Syed Mohsin Al-Hakim At-Tabatabai (A’lallahu Maqamahu)’s son Hujjatul Islam Syed Abdul Aziz Al-Hakim in Iraq.

Holy Karbala-based Ayatullah Sayyed Muhammad Taqi Al-Modarresi issued a statement denouncing the assassination attempt in which a number of believers were martyred.

The Ayatollah described the attack as a chain ring of terrorism against religious leadership, political signs and innocent citizens in a bid to create hurdles in the upcoming elections in Iraq.

He urged Iraqis to keep stick to the Marjaiyah (religious authority) and fully participate in the polls, due in January, 2005.

Iran Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hamid-Reza Assefi said: “Such criminal acts are aimed at eliminating Iraqi leaders from the political scene and causing tension to prevent the timely holding of the elections.”

Lebanon's Hezbollah said the “ugly crime” that targeted Al-Hakim “is aimed at undermining the Iraqi people's unity and instigating a sectarian conflict.”

“Such crime only serves and benefits the US occupation forces and their administration in Washington which seeks to control Iraqi territory and Iraq's natural wealth,” Hezbollah said in a statement.

Vice chief of the Lebanon’s Supreme Islamic Shiia Council Sheikh Abdel Amir Qoblan condemned the attack terming it a service for Zionists interests.
