Palestinians complain to UNESCO for Israeli ruin of heritage By: Ahmad Hammadi RAMALLAH: Palestine’s Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage, a department of the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, has send a complaint to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on the recent Israeli incursion and destruction of ancient structures in the ancient part of Nablus. The complaint mentioned details of the destruction as well as number and names of the buildings affected in the city. “The current destruction works are a violation of the international agreement of the protection of cultural heritage during the armed dispute in 1907 and 1954, the Geneva Agreement 1949, the international agreement for the protection of cultural heritage and international nature 1972 and then the issued advertisements by UNESCO about the protection of cultural diversity and deliberate destruction of cultural heritage 2003,” the complaint made clear. It asked UNSCO to intervene immediately to stop these Israeli activities taking necessary steps in protecting the heritage. END |
