Gaza: Protest held against French scarf ban proposal

GAZA CITY: Palestinian women on Monday organized a demonstration in Gaza city to protest against the French proposal to bar the Muslim women from wearing headscarves in state schools.

Holding banners and placards inscribed with statements in Arabic and French, the protestors gathered in front of the French culture council in Gaza city. They were chanting anti-Chirac slogans. “Banning Hijab is against freedom and it is terrorism,” read one placard.

Last month, French President Jacques Chirac asked parliament to pass a legislation to ban the wearing of 'hijab,' or headscarf, in public schools to protect the country's secular nature, drawing protests across the world against the decision.
