Jordan int’l conference discusses Western misreading of Islam By: Sultan Ahmed AMMAN, Jordan: A first international Islamic conference aimed at addressing the issue of 'terrorism' and also Western misconceptions of Islam was concluded here on 28 June Monday. Around 100 prominent figures including Islamic scholars and thinkers from the Arab and Muslim world as well as from some other countries took part in the three-day conference that was opened under the theme “Islamic moderation, between theory and practice” by Jordan's Minister of Endowments and Holy Sites Affairs Dr. Ahmed Huleil, on behalf of King Abdullah. Speakers stressed the need for correcting the misgivings and misunderstanding about Islam in the West besides presenting its true picture focusing on the moderate stance in almost all issues concerning human life. The conference discussed about 14 major topics such as moderation in political thoughts and cultural dialogue, extremism, terrorism, relations with others, impact of moderation in the awakening of the Muslim Ummah and the like. Several working papers were presented in various sessions. END |
