Ashura in Turkey: Women mourn with chained hands By: Abdullah ISTANBUL, Turkey: Ashura was observed in Turkey like some other parts of the globe on Monday March 1 to commemorate the martyrdom of al-Imam al-Hosayn (p) and his 72 near and dear ones with fervor and devotion.
The day began with Ali al-Akber (18-year-old young son of al-Imam al-Hosayn) prayer call in the morning followed by a’mal of the day. Then mourning sittings were held attended by multitudes of mourners. Later, men, women and children took out mourning processions. Mourning women dressed in black beat themselves with their chained hands on the chest in Istanbul in following the sunnah of chaste ladies of Prophet household who were chained after the martyrdom of al-Imam al-Hosayn (as) and were taken to the bazaars of kufa and Syria, courts of Yezid (l) and ibni Zeyad (l).
