Morocco: Fasting eats into wallets By: Sultan Ahmed RABAT, Moroccan: A government study shows that Moroccans spend 28 per cent more on food during the holy fasting month of Ramadan. According to Morocco's High Planning Commission an average family spends 28 per cent more on food products during Ramadan the other months of the year. In Morocco, Ramadan began on October 15. The state body lists products whose consumption increase significantly during Ramadan, including milk and dairy products and eggs. The Iftar meal, which breaks the fast after sunset, has become increasingly lavish and heavy in recent years across the Arab world. Studies by health experts and dieticians have shown that many Muslims actually gain weight during the month of fasting. END |
