Israel closes Ibrahimi mosque, Palestinians slate By: Ahmed Hammadi WEST BANK, Palestine: The Israeli occupying authorities have shut the Ibrahami mosque in Al-Khalil, southern West Bank town, to Muslims aimed at allowing colonialist Jewish settlers to celebrate the Jewish New Year at the Islamic holy place. The measure was severely condemned by the Islamic Waqf (Endowment) authorities who described it as “a flagrant disregard for religious freedoms and the sanctity of the exclusively Islamic holy place.” According to reports the mosque will remain off-limit to Muslims during duration of the Jewish New Year which started Thursday. In 1994, Israeli government had partitioned the mosque turning more than half of it to Jewish extremists. The partitioning followed the massacre of some 29 Arab worshipers at the hands of a Jewish terrorist. END |
