French catholic cleric: Attempts to storm Aqsa 'a disgrace'
By: Anjum Kermani
PARIS, France: Michelle Louling, a renowned French
cleric, has called for an end to the Israeli occupation of
Jerusalem describing the attempts by the Israeli rightist
extremist wing for storming of Islamic holy sites in the
city as a "disgrace".
In a statement, he said the Israeli government would
shoulder the responsibility for any action taken against
the Islamic holy sites.
He said the storming of the Islamic holy sites is not
acceptable and is contrary to the principles of tolerance
and respect for other faiths, particularly the Islamic
religion, which, he said, has a historical and realistic
presence in the city.
The 80-year-old French cleric warned against any action
that would impinge on the sanctity of the Islamic holy
sites, saying that this would inflame the entire Middle
Eastern region.
As for the Jewish intention of building the so called
"Solomon's Temple," Bishop Louling said right now there
are realities on the ground, and any talk of altering the
situation is futile under any circumstances, and any
infringement is a no-go area.
There are some extremists who want to put the clock of
history back on unreasonable excuses or by using religious
legends that incite violence and intolerance, he added.
The Catholic cleric said the Vatican's stand on this issue
is clear, in that it supports four resolutions of the UN
that call for ending of the occupation of the Holy City,
in particular Resolution No 478 of the Security Council
that was passed on 20 August 1980 that condemns Israeli
control of Jerusalem.
