US among nations that block human rights moves, Report

By: Mohamed Ali

NEW YORK, United States: The international aid agency Oxfam is accusing the United States, Brazil, India and Russia of blocking, or at the least of being lukewarm over, moves to enshrine an international duty to protect civilians from human rights atrocities.

The criticism comes ahead of a summit scheduled for next month.

In a statement urging countries not to undermine the emerging new principle, to be published this weekend, Oxfam will also list Syria, Iran, Cuba, Pakistan, Egypt and Algeria as opponents of the idea.

Chief of Oxfam in New York Nicola Reindorp said: "We've taken the step of exposing the governments blocking the agreement so people around the world can call on them to change their minds."
