Blair urges combating “poisonous misinterpretation of Islam”

By: Nabil Raza

LONDON, Britain: British Prime Minister Tony Blair condemned attacks against Muslims and urged Britons not to judge all Muslims by the acts of those inspired by a "perverted and poisonous misinterpretation" of Islam.

Since the bombings that killed at least 52 people last Thursday, several mosques in Britain have been attacked and a Pakistani was killed in the central English city of Nottingham.

"I would ask for the same measured and calm response from the country that has characterized it since last Thursday," when bombers struck at the British capital's transport system, Blair told parliament.

"This is a small group of extremists. Not one who can be ignored, but neither should it define Muslims in Britain who are overwhelmingly law-abiding, decent members of our society," he said during the weekly session of prime minister's questions.

He added that his government condemned any attack against Muslims "unreservedly."

Blair also said his government would begin talks with British Muslim leaders about combating the "poisonous misinterpretation of Islam" which lay behind the attacks. London was also talking to other nations on how to mobilize the "moderate and true voice of Islam."

"It's our intention to see what help and support we can give ... as to how we can get some real international support for this, and understanding of how important it is."

Blair said this was so that "in these countries where the roots of this sometimes grow, in some of the twisted teaching and some of the violence that is taught at a very early age to young people, we can pull up this evil ideology at its roots."

UK blasts rot began against Muslims, no one could compensate loss: Bokhari

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Syed Shujaat Ali Bokhari, Additional Secretary General of Tehreek Nafaz-e-Fiqh-e-Jafariya Pakistan, has said that Islam is the religion of peace, tranquillity, integrity, and respect for mankind and the real follower of it is the one from whose tongue and hand, the followers of religion and Shariat remain safe and the Momin (believer) is the one who is the protector and defender of the honour, dignity, blood, life and wealth of all and sundry.
