Bahrain plans Supreme Islamic Council formation

By: Ali Al-Qadumi

MANAMA, Bahrain: Bahrain is to form a council aimed at focusing on common principles that link Islamic schools of thought, strengthen peaceful co-existence and unite the kingdom's scholars and intellectuals on objectives for the sake of developing the Islamic movement.

The proposal to set up the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (SCIA) received the approval of the Chamber of Deputies, with the lawmakers hailing the formation as the first step to unite Muslims from various Islamic schools of thought.

“The SCIA would also enhance peace and harmony among citizens,” Speaker Khalifa Al Dhahrani said calling upon scholars from the Islamic world to combine their efforts for confronting the enemies of Islam and promoting peace and development in Islamic countries.

Its members will be well-known Sunni and Shia scholars with sound reputation, the deputies said.
