Mosul victims buried, Ulema urged for stance against bombers

By: Ismail Zabeeh

MOSUL, Iraq: Iraqi victims of Mosul terror bombing were buried in separate funerals on Friday while UN warned of rising violence in the country and media reports from Jordan told that suicide bomber of last month’s Hill attack in which at least 130 people were martyred was Jordanian.

Earlier, officials and grieving relatives called off plans for a large joint funeral procession because of fears it might be targeted by terrorists.

This followed a mortar blast on Friday at the site of the original attack.

Shia and Sunni leaders while condemning the terrorism have appealed for calm.

“It was a terrorist attack meant to spark civil war but I think the Sunnis and Shias will not succumb,” said Nureddine Hayali, a spokesman for the Islamic Party.

The office of Ayatullah Ali As-Sistani, the spiritual guide, said he was calling for “unity and solidarity among all Iraqis despite the attacks targeting the innocent.”

The bomber struck on Thursday as mourners crowded into a hall next to a husseiniya ‘Shahedain’, which is surrounded by cheap housing in Mosul's central Tameem neighborhood.

Also on Friday, the US military said the death toll of the explosion had risen to at least 50.

Media reports from Jordan disclosed that the Hilla bomber named Raed Mansur Al-Bana belonged to Jordanian city of As-Salat. According to Al-Ghadd newspaper bomber’s family held a fatiha program for him. He was bachelor of law and left his country three months back.

Meanwhile, Iraqi National Congress has called Muslim ulema (clerics) to adopt clear-cut stance against suicide bombers that target innocent Iraqis.

In his latest report to the Security Council about Iraq, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said the scale and sophistication of attacks are on the rise, worrying signs as Iraq's new leaders prepare to take power.

He said, after a brief lull, violence in Iraq has spiked again to pre-election levels, something the country's new government must address quickly.

“Particular care should be taken by those responsible for ensuring security to see that their actions do not adversely affect the civilian population,” Annan wrote.
