Spain: Schools initiate Islamic studies in curricula

MADRID, Spain: Spanish schools have
introduced with the beginning of 2005 Islam Studies in the curriculum
of a number of their schools particularly those in large cities.
The step has been taken in the framework of a new law known as “the
education reform law,” which was passed by the new Socialist
Government in 2004.
Muslim children go to a number of these urban schools, among them
Barcelona (northeast of Spain) and the capital Madrid plus other
smaller cities.
The basic course only focus on the basics of Islam and general
principles and practices, bearing in mind that the lessons given would
include not only Muslim students, but all the students in a given
school.
