Sheikh Salman says anti-terror law curbs freedom

By: Ali Al-Qadumi

MANAMA, Bahrain: The Chairman of the Islamic National Accord Society Sheikh Ali Salman has said the country’s “nationalist forces totally reject the proposed anti-terror law” which the government hurriedly referred to the parliament for approval.

Islamic National Accord Society is an umbrella of opposition groups.

Salman said the bill “violates all forms of freedom, particularly the freedom of practicing politics in the country.”

“We are facing a law that cannot be dealt with. All of us, including Sunnis, Shias or secularists, must totally reject the bill because it is a strong tidal wave that is against all these forces, their freedom and interest,” Salman said while delivering a speech at the As-Sadeq (AS) Grand Mosque here in Manama.

“Whoever contributes to its passage would be responsible for a serious ethical crime that would be meted out to the citizenry,” he said.

He criticized the articles of the bill which he described as ‘elastic and vague’, adding that the bill opens the door wide to the security apparatus to violate the rights of the citizens.
