BEIRUT, Lebanon: A conference of Lebanese Shias and Sunnis in Beirut, capital city of Lebanon, called for preserving Islamic unity and condemned desecration of holy Quran by American soldiers at Cuba detention center saying that respect to all heavenly books is obligatory for every person.

The one-day conference, held on Wednesday to mark the fifth anniversary of Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon, was attended by Vice-President of Supreme Islamic Shia Council Lebanon Sheikh Abdul Amir Qablan and Lebanon Sunnis Mufti Sheikh Muhammad Rashid Qobbani.

Addressing the meeting, speakers said Muslim unity is need of the hour and necessary to solve religious, political, social and financial problems.

The meeting also supported formation of a separate homeland for Palestinians terming it their legal right.
