By: Ali Al-Qadumi

MANAMA, Bahrain: Shia leaders in Bahrain began a series of demonstrations on Wednesday in an effort to block the passage in parliament of a proposed new family law which they say is un- Islamic.

In Seef district just outside the capital Manama, hundreds of women, many of them veiled and clad in black robes, held a silent demonstration.

Earlier, Syed Abdullah Alghuraifi addressed the crowd which held placards calling for the legislation to be rejected.

The law, dubbed the personal status law, would govern domestic disputes such as child custody, inheritance and divorce.
