Azerbaijan polls: Ruling party takes win, fraud claimed

By: Nabil Raza

BAKU, Azerbaijan: Azerbaijani governing party has won the country's parliamentary election on Monday, with Western observers also set to give a verdict on the vote which, if damning, could fuel opposition protests.

According to the Central Election Commission, with just over 85 percent of votes counted, the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan Party had won 62 seats in the 125-seat parliament, while the main Azadlyq opposition bloc had five seats.

The bloc has accused the ruling party of widespread fraud and said starting from Tuesday it would stage peaceful rallies to protest the result. But some feared violent clashes with police who have said they will not allow any disorder.

"The elections were not able to reflect the will of the people and were totally falsified," said Ali Keremli, chief of the Popular Front Party and a top leader in the opposition coalition Azadliq, which means Freedom.

Western countries had urged a free vote in this Shia-majority country of eight million people located between Russia and Iran.
