Tajik government bans hijab

By: Faysal

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan: Despite the fact that more than 90% of Tajikistan is Muslim, the Tajik Education Ministry has banned girl students from wearing headscarves in secular schools.

Education Minister Abdudjabor Rakhmonov said wearing the hijab, or head scarf and other religious symbols "is unacceptable in secular schools and violates the constitution and a new law on education."

He expressed concern that pupils spent too much time in mosques at the expense of their education.

"Many spend evenings in mosques and do not do their homework," Rakhmonov said, adding that during the holy month of Ramadan many did not attend classes after Friday prayers.

Tajikistan is constitutionally a secular country.

"Knowledge is better than wealth because it protects you while you have to guard wealth. it decreases if you keep on spending it but the more you make use of knowledge ,the more it increases . what you get through wealth disappears as soon as wealth disappears but what you achieve through knowledge will remain even after you."MORE ..
