US block UN resolution forcing Israel to stop aggression

NEW YORK: Washington has blocked a UN Security Council
resolution that would have urged Israel to stop its "excessive use of
force" against the Palestinians.
The text was proposed by Qatar, the Council’s only Arab member, in
response to recent Israeli bombardments of the Gaza Strip that have so
far claimed the lives of more than 18 Palestinians.
The draft statement also expressed concerns about Palestinian attacks
on Israel and urged both sides to comply with international law and
refrain from any steps that could escalate the situation.
After blocking the draft statement, the US Ambassador to the UN John
Bolton said the text “was disproportionately critical of Israel, and
unfairly so, and needlessly so,” adding that Washington could not back
it.
But Palestinian UN Observer Riyad Mansour accused the US of “shielding
and protecting Israeli activities and aggression against the
Palestinian people.”
