Israel’s MC admits failures in Lebanon fighting

By: Ahmed Hammadi

HELD JERUSALEM: For the first time Israeli military chief admitted publicly there were failings in the army’s performance during its 34-day attack on Lebanon.

Lt Gen Dan Halutz in a letter to Israeli troops wrote: “The fighting uncovered shortcomings in various areas — logistical, operational and command. We are committed to a thorough, honest, rapid and complete investigation of all the shortcomings and successes."

"Questions will be answered professionally, and everyone will be investigated — from me down to the last soldier,” he added.

In addition to the pressure he’s facing over his handling of the offensive in Lebanon, Gen Halutz has faced criticism for selling his entire stock market portfolio hours before the outbreak of fighting. He has denied any wrongdoing.

While Gen Halutz admitted military failures, the head of the Shin Bet security service called the war “a fiasco" in his first public statement on the conflict.
