US holds talks to end war as Israel continues aggression

By: Karim Tellawi

TYRE, Lebanon: Israeli commandos attacked Lebanon's southern city of Tyre on Saturday as a top American official met Lebanese leaders on a possible deal to end the 25-day-old war.

US Assistant Secretary of State David Welch held talks with Nabih Berri, the speaker of parliament who has acted as the main contact between the government and Hizbollah since the war began.

Meanwhile, Lebanese protested at Welch's visit, gathering outside Siniora's offices in Beirut to condemn US support for Israel's aggression in Lebanon.

"(President George W.) Bush is a criminal and should be put on trial. He destroyed Iraq and now he's started work on Lebanon," said Nada Eissa, 32, from the southern town of Khiam.
