Bahrain’s Shiites lose to make gains in 2nd round of vote

By: Ali Al-Qadumi

MANAMA, Bahrain: Bahrain state-run television reported Sunday citing official results that the country's Shiite-led opposition lost a bid to gain control of parliament in runoff elections.

The Shiite al-Wefaq party won 16 of the house's 40 seats in the first round of voting a week ago. It needed five of the 11 seats up for grabs Saturday for a majority but gained only two, giving it a total of 18, TV said.

Conservative Sunni candidates allied with the government took 13 seats in the first round and nine in the runoff, for a total of 22.

Shiites make up more than 75 percent of the country’s population.

Officials reported high turnout on Saturday. But the campaign and election were marred by widespread allegations of fraud, and the government did not allow international observers to monitor the vote.

Shias gain in Bahrain national polls

MANAMA, Bahrain: Bahraini Shias have won at least 16 of the 40 seats in the country's parliament in national elections that attracted a high turnout. Before the vote, the mainly Shia Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society (INAA) party had said that if it did not win 13 parliamentary seats it would know that Saturday's polls had been rigged by the country's rulers.
