Hussaini commemoration in Held-Kashmir: Procession stopped

By: Nizam Hussain

SRINAGAR, Held Kashmir: The Indian police on Tuesday Muharram 8 fired teargas canisters and used bamboo canes to break up Muharram processions in the occupied Kashmir arresting dozens of hussaini mourners and leaving several others wounded, according to witnesses.

Muharram processions have been banned in Indian-occupied Kashmir since 1989. Only small mourning rallies and processions are allowed in some areas.

On Muharram 7, a procession was taken out peacefully without any disruption in Srinagar. Kashmiri men and children performed qama’-zani (cut-open head to shed blood in memory of Imam Hussain).
