Attack near Karbala holy shrines martyrs over 50

By: Ismail Zabeeh

HOLY CITY OF KARBALA, Iraq: More than 50 people, including pilgrims, were martyred and dozens wounded when a suicide bomber detonated near the two holy shrines in Karbala on Thursday.

Police spokesman Rahman Mishawi said the blast occurred about 10:15 a.m. (2:15 a.m. ET) in a pedestrian mall that runs between the Al-Imam Al-Hussein (peace be upon him) and Abu`l Fazl Al-Abbas (peace be upon him) holy mausoleums.

Mishawi said the bomber committed the terror attack at a distance of ten meters from Bab-ol Qiblah – one of the main gates of the holy Husseini shrine.

Iraqi television showed body parts and torn clothing in pools of blood in the area near the holy shrines.

It was the bloodiest attack in the holy city since over 200 Husseini mourners were martyred by multiple suicide bombings during Ashura in March 2004.

More than 50 people died in attacks across Iraq on Wednesday.
