Terrorist Israel pounds Lebanon, Saudi blames Hezbollah, protests held

By: Karim Tellawi

BEIRUT, Lebanon: Israeli air strikes on Lebanon left scores of Lebanese martyred on Monday and Hizbollah announced more rocket attacks on Israel after major world powers put the onus on the Syrian- and Iranian-backed militia to end the fighting.

Overnight raids destroyed two army posts on the northern Lebanese coast, martyring nine Lebanese soldiers, and damaged the homes of Hizbollah officials in eastern Lebanon.

Several thunderous blasts echoed over the capital at dawn and black smoke rose from a blazing fuel storage depot in the Christian suburb of Dora.

According to security sources civilian installations, petrol stations and factories elsewhere were also hit.

Sunday, leaders of the Group of Eight industrialized powers meeting in Russia said Israel had a right to self-defense, telling Hizbollah to free two captured Israeli soldiers and end attacks on Israel. They did not demand an immediate ceasefire.

Hizbollah Chief Hassan Nasrallah said the rocketing of Israel's third-biggest city Haifa was retaliation for Israeli killing of civilians and promised more "surprises."

Meanwhile, regional powerhouse Saudi Arabia, which pledged 50 million dollars in immediate aid to Lebanon after Lebanese government appeal, has indirectly pointed finger at Hezbollah for provoking Israel's onslaught on Lebanon.

While not explicitly naming the Lebanese militia, a Saudi official source quoted by the official SPA news agency accused certain elements of "adventurism" that put all Arab nations at risk.

"It is necessary to make a distinction between legitimate resistance (to occupation) and irresponsible adventurism adopted by certain elements within the state and taken without its knowledge," and without coordination and consultation with Arab countries, the official source said.

Separately, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Indonesia, Bahrain and Tel Aviv to protest Israel's attacks against Lebanon and the Palestinian territories.
