Israel warns full-scale invasion; world's silence questioned

By: Karim Tellawi

BEIRUT, Lebanon: After warning it could launch a full-scale ground invasion despite mounting international calls for a ceasefire, Israel has waged deadly air and artillery strikes against Lebanon for the 10th day and called up more troops.

“The army called up several thousand reserves in order to strengthen our forces against Hezbollah," a military source said Friday after the army again warned residents of bomb-hit southern Lebanon to flee.

Beirut said its army was ready to go into battle if Israel invaded.

Waving white scarves, residents of the south streamed to safer havens in the north as buses and boats continued to ferry thousands of foreigners out of Lebanon in one of the biggest mass evacuations since World War II.

French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy, on a visit to the region, issued appeals for a ceasefire and help for civilians, warned that the escalating conflict lead to a "catastrophe."

Meanwhile, many Lebanese say the failure of the international community to resolve the crisis in their country is worsening the situation.

They fear the escalation has become a zero-sum game that will get worse unless pressure is put on both sides, but so far there is no sign that intervention will come.

Amal Saad-Ghoreyeb, author of Hizbu'llah: Politics and Religion told Aljazeera.net that "The international community is doing very little to end the conflict. If you look at the G8 and the UN Security Council none of the members have the inclination to call for a ceasefire.

‘Israel has no plans to attack Iran, Syria’

LONDON, Britain: Deputy Prime Minister of Israel Shimon Peres said his country is not planning to attack Iran or Syria, noting that the Jewish state already had its "hands full" with Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.
