JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia: At the start of a Gulf tour to rally support for his peace plan, Nuri Al-Maliki, Iraqi Prime Minister, won Saudi Arabia's backing for his efforts to halt the bloodshed in Iraq.

According to the official SPA news agency Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz told Maliki, "On behalf of ... King Abdullah, I assure you of ... (Saudi Arabia's) full support for you and your constitutional government."

Prince Sultan said Saudi Arabia hoped his government would usher in "stability and security" in Iraq and put an end to the hardships of the Iraqi people.

SPA quoted Saudi King Abdullah as saying that Saudi Arabia was "keen on Iraq's unity, territorial integrity and safety of its citizens to regain its normal position among Arab and Muslim countries."
