Buratha Mosque hit again; dozens martyred, hurt

By: Ismail Zabeeh

BAGHDAD, Iraq: A suicide shoe bomber on Friday attacked Buratha Mosque in northwestern Baghdad leaving more than a dozen worshippers martyred and over 30 injured.

Buratha mosque is a sacred place in sight of Muslims and Christians as well.

More than 97 worshippers were martyred and over 180 others wounded in a series of suicide bombings by men dressed as women April 7 at the mosque, also carried out during Friday prayers.

The blast came less than an hour before the Friday prayers, when the Buratha mosque would have been filled with thousands of worshippers.

The bomber was on foot due to a four-hour driving ban in the city intended to prevent car bombs during Friday prayers.

The streets of Baghdad are also under the watch of more than 50,000 troops taking part in a massive security operation that began earlier this week. The troops have set up more checkpoints and enforcing more stringent curfews.

Historic perspective of Al-Buratha mosque
