Bosnia: Serb-ruined historic mosque rebuilt

By: Raza Ali

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina: Muslims in Bosnia have begun rebuilding a 16th-century mosque, damaged in 1993 by Bosnian Serbs who controlled the town of Banja Luka.

The Ferhard-pasha mosque was built in 1579 and survived two world wars before being declared a historic monument under UNESCO's protection about 30 years ago.

However, explosives were set off under its walls during the 1991-95 ethnic war in the former Yugoslavia.

Rebuilding of the mosque, one of the most famous for its beauty in the Balkans, will cost $9.8 million.
