Shia Ulema-e-Hind to form a political party to protect interests

By: Nizam Hussain

LUCKNOW, India: In India, Shia groups are set to launch a party to protect their interests and to ensure the community's representation in the political arena.

Shia Ulema-e-Hind general secretary Maulana Ali Hussain Kummi, entrusted with the responsibility of forming the new outfit, said the new party will be known as the Shia Democratic Alliance (SDA).

He said the Shias were lagging behind in all fields and there was no representation for them in the Uttar Pradesh cabinet.

"It is essential for Shias to form a political party to take up issues concerning the community," Kummi said.

The formation of the new Shia party will come close on the heels of the setting up of the People's Democratic Front and the Muslim Political Council by Muslim leaders.

Kummi said the Shia Ulema-e-Hind had asked him to form the new party in consultation with senior leaders of the community.

An announcement about the new party will be made after a meeting of the organization on June 25.
