SRINAGAR, Held Kashmir: Police in Indian-occupied Kashmir fired teargas and batons on Tuesday to disperse hundreds of Muslims protesting the India Today magazine publication of a picture of a playing card showing an image of holy Ka’ba in the holy city of Makkah, police and witnesses said.

They said at least 10 protesters were detained.

The protestors gathered near Lal Chowk, in the heart of Srinagar, shouting "La Ilaha Illallah" (there is no god but Allah) ... down with India Today."

According to witnesses youths set fire to copies of the magazine.

In its latest issue, the weekly published pictures of playing cards, one showing an image of Ka’ba in holy Makkah. The protesters are angry because gambling is forbidden by Islam.

All copies of the India Today magazine have been seized, officials said.

Shops and businesses in the area closed down following the demonstration. Similar demonstrations were also held in other parts of the city.
