Attack on Imamain Askariyain ‘outrage for all humanity’: UNESCO

By: Mohamed Ali

NEW YORK, United States: The head of the United Nations organization entrusted with preserving the world’s historical, spiritual and cultural heritage has condemned the destruction of Samarra holy shrine and other mosques and churches in Iraq as “an outrage for all of humanity.”

“I call on all parties to respect all holy places,” UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura said in a statement on the destruction this week of the holy shrine of Imam Ali Al-Hadi and Imam Al-Askary (peace be upon them) in Samarra and the heavy loss of lives in the violence.

He also condemned the destruction of mosques and churches in the country and restated UNESCO’s readiness to continue working with the Iraqi authorities to protect and conserve the historical, spiritual and cultural heritage of important sites.
