Al Wefaq calls govt to bar military, foreigners from voting

By: Ali Al-Qadumi

MANAMA, Bahrain: Sheikh Ali Salman, secretary general of Al Wefaq party of Bahrain, has renewed calls to bar military personnel and recently naturalized Bahrainis from taking part in the November 25 elections, claiming that the government grants citizenship to foreigners serving in the armed forces in order to alter the demographic balance of the country.

Shiias make up majority in the country with more than 80 percent of their population.

Addressing a press conference held on the outskirts of the capital Manama, he also called for independent local and international election observers, adding that he feared that the electronic voting system proposed by the government might be used to manipulate results.

He presented 16 candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections, saying they hoped to win around half of the parliamentary seats.

Sixteen candidates have been selected to run in their districts, candidates from three further districts are yet to be nominated, Ali Salman said.

Bahrain annuls e-voting to ease Shiias anger

MANAMA, Bahrain: The Bahraini government decided to annul electronic voting planned for later this year after opposition parties said such methods aim to rig the vote and disenfranchise the country's Shiite majority, a Cabinet minister said.
