Pontiff invites Muslim envoys to Rome for dialogue

By: Anjum Kermani

ROME, Italy: Pope Benedict has sent invitations to Muslim ambassadors to the Vatican and Italian Islamic leaders for a meeting on Monday at the pontiff's summer palace in Castelgandolfo outside Rome in an attempt to end the furore caused by his speech in Germany.

A senior Vatican official on Friday said the purpose of the meeting was to restart dialogue with the Islamic world.

Muslim diplomats accredited to the Holy See hoped it would help to restore trust between the Roman Catholic Church and Muslims offended by the pope's speech last week in his native Germany.
